The Florida Department of Environmental Protection's Critically Eroded Beaches report, last updated in August 2024, is the state's official inventory of shoreline segments where erosion has progressed far enough to threaten development, infrastructure, or habitat, and to qualify for state and federal restoration cost-share. For Walton County, the report and the state's own Annual Assessment of Florida's Beaches both put the same figure on the record: 18.8 of the county's roughly 26 miles of Gulf coastline are designated critically eroded, split across five separate segments. Those five run from the western county line near Miramar Beach, through Dune Allen and Blue Mountain Beach, through a shorter stretch around Gulf Trace and Grayton Beach, through Seagrove Beach, and east through Seacrest Beach and Inlet Beach.

Rosemary Beach's own frontage does not appear as a separately named segment on that list. Given that Seacrest Beach immediately to its west and Inlet Beach immediately to its east are both named, that's a meaningful comparative data point, not a coincidence of the map. Hurricane Michael (2018): A Near Miss, Not a Direct Hit

Two years before Sally, Hurricane Michael made landfall near Mexico Beach in October 2018 as a Category 5 storm, roughly 50 miles east of Rosemary Beach — close enough that Walton County and the rest of 30A were placed under mandatory evacuation orders, but far enough that Michael's most catastrophic wind and surge damage landed east of the 30A corridor rather than on it. That project has a long, unfinished history worth knowing before assuming it changes anything soon. Walton County commissioners tabled it in March 2016 after too few beachfront owners granted the easements the Corps needed, then revived it in 2022 under a more favorable cost-share (roughly 50% county, 20% state, 30% federal on an estimated $62 million first sand placement). As of this writing in 2026, the project remains in the survey and design phase rather than construction — the Corps completed topographic surveys in late 2025 and hydrographic surveys in mid-2026, with a revised design plan expected in 2027 and final design targeted for 2028, per county officials. Buyers shouldn't assume fresh sand is coming to any specific Rosemary Beach address on a predictable timeline; ask Walton County's coastal resource office for the current status before treating the project as either imminent or irrelevant.

At the same time, no direct major hurricane has tested this shoreline in the historical record, the county's nourishment project covers this frontage but remains years from construction, and the CCCL and 30-year erosion projection still govern what can be built or rebuilt on any specific lot.
