Things to Do in Mendocino
Mendocino's real draws go beyond a generic scenic-town description: a dramatic, named blowhole at the end of Main Street, a 1909 lighthouse with one of only three British-built Fresnel lenses still operating in the US, a genuine Hollywood filming trail, and redwood outrigger canoe access to California's longest undeveloped estuary.
Mendocino Headlands State Park: Bluffs, Arches, and a Blowhole
Mendocino Headlands State Park wraps around much of the village's ocean-facing edge, with a trail network offering free, immediate access to dramatic bluff-top scenery -- sea caves, natural arches, and offshore rock formations carved over millions of years of wave erosion. The park's best-known single feature sits at the west end of Main Street: a blowhole, sometimes called the Punch Bowl, a collapsed sea cave connected to the ocean by a tunnel, where water can reportedly shoot up to roughly 150 feet during storm conditions -- a genuinely dramatic, free, walkable attraction most visitors don't expect from a small town's Main Street.
Point Cabrillo Light Station State Historic Park
Point Cabrillo Light Station, about four miles north of Mendocino, is a genuinely well-preserved lighthouse complex: surveyed in 1873, built starting in 1908, and first lit on June 10, 1909, it retains 12 of its original 15 buildings and structures across 297 acres of trails. Its lens is a third-order British-built Fresnel lens -- one of only three British-built lenses still operating in the United States, a genuinely rare piece of maritime-lighting engineering. This is a real, substantial state historic park, not just a photo-op lighthouse, with enough trail acreage and preserved keeper's-residence structures to fill a half-day visit.
The Real Murder, She Wrote Filming Trail
Mendocino stood in for the fictional coastal Maine town of Cabot Cove in nine location-shot episodes of Murder, She Wrote between 1984 and 1996, and specific filming locations are identifiable and visitable today: the Blair House Inn, at the northwest corner of Little Lake and Ford streets, served as the exterior of Jessica Fletcher's house, and the Hill House Inn was the series' most-featured hotel. The Mendocino Headlands and the storefronts along Main Street were used regularly as well. The town has leaned into that history formally -- the first dedicated Murder, She Wrote Festival took place May 4-5, 2024 in Mendocino. Beyond the TV series, Mendocino hosted location filming for East of Eden (1955, starring James Dean, using South Mendocino Bay and Rundle Street locations) and The Majestic (2001, starring Jim Carrey, filming partly at Point Cabrillo Light Station), among more than 50 film and TV productions documented by the Kelley House Museum as having used the Mendocino coast since 1904.
Big River: Redwood Outrigger Canoes and Kayaking
Big River, meeting the ocean at the village's south edge, is described by local outfitters as California's longest undeveloped estuary, with a tidal lower reach providing calm, protected year-round paddling regardless of ocean conditions. Catch a Canoe & Bicycles Too, based at the river's mouth, rents locally made redwood outrigger canoes (holding up to seven people), kayaks, and standard canoes, with paddlers able to explore small trails winding through redwood forest along the banks and regularly spot harbor seals and river otters.
Kelley House Museum and Local History
The Kelley House Museum, in an 1861 building constructed as the home of William Kelley (who arrived in Mendocino in July 1852 on the ship that brought the town's first lumber mill), has been run by the Mendocino Historical Research Center since 1973 and interprets the town's logging and shipping history alongside typical 1800s domestic life. For anyone drawn to Mendocino's Victorian architecture and New England-transplant founding story, this is the single best place to understand why the town looks and feels the way it does.
Mendocino Art Center and Mendocino Music Festival
The Mendocino Art Center, atop the headlands and active since 1959, functions as an educational, exhibition, and resource center for visual and performing arts, offering classes and exhibitions to visitors and residents alike. The Mendocino Music Festival, held annually since 1986 in July, brings a full symphony orchestra, opera, chamber music, jazz, and a wide range of other performances to a tent concert hall on the Pacific bluffs -- a genuinely substantial cultural event for a village this small, drawing performers and audiences from well beyond the immediate area.

Just south of Mendocino near Little River, Van Damme State Park adds a quarter-mile wheelchair-accessible pygmy forest boardwalk trail, guided sea-cave kayak tours departing daily, and a range of hiking trails from flat, quarter-mile walks to the strenuous 9.15-mile Fern Canyon Lollapalozza. Just north, Russian Gulch State Park has its own separate blowhole feature, distinct from the one at the west end of Mendocino's Main Street -- worth knowing so visitors don't confuse the two when planning a trip.
