Dining on Maui: Real Restaurants, Verified by Name

Maui's wildfire recovery, its Bill 9 short-term-rental fight, and its leasehold-land system are covered on this site's Maui hub page and aren't repeated here. This page is a separate research pass built around named, currently operating Maui restaurants across the island's distinct regions -- West Maui, South Maui, Upcountry, the North Shore, and Hana -- checked against each business's own site or a current 2026 listing source rather than assumed from the island's reputation. Maui's dining scene is genuinely excellent, but this page treats West Maui dining with particular care: Lahaina lost real restaurants, with real employees and real histories, to the August 2023 wildfire, and some are still years from reopening. This page says plainly what's open, what's rebuilding, and what's gone -- it does not list a destroyed restaurant as if you can walk in for dinner tonight.

Lahaina and West Maui: What Survived, What Reopened, What Was Lost

Front Street was Lahaina's historic restaurant row, and the August 2023 wildfire hit it directly. As of mid-2026, the historic commercial core -- the blocks south of a surviving stretch at the north end -- remains behind construction fencing, with commercial rebuilding permits still moving slowly through the county's Cultural Resources Commission review process given the area's status as the former capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom. Front Street itself was scheduled to reopen to vehicle traffic on August 1, 2026, per Spectrum News Hawaii and KITV -- a genuinely current, dated marker of just how gradual this recovery has been, three years on.

A cluster of restaurants at the north end of Front Street, physically separated from the main burn zone, never closed or has since reopened: Star Noodle, an Asian-inspired shared-plates restaurant known for garlic noodles, was confirmed intact and reopened per its own social channels and multiple 2026 travel guides. Chef Mark Ellman's two adjoining restaurants, Honu Oceanside and Mala Ocean Tavern, both survived and are currently operating with oceanfront lanai seating, per current OpenTable and Tripadvisor listings. Aloha Mixed Plate, the plate-lunch institution known for kalua pig and laulau, and Coco Deck (operating in the space formerly known as Duck Kine) round out the currently-open north Front Street cluster. The Old Lahaina Luau, a cultural dinner-and-show attraction rather than a restaurant in the traditional sense, was one of the first major visitor attractions to reopen after the fire and continues operating in 2026.

Some of Lahaina's best-known restaurant names did not survive, and this page won't pretend otherwise. Fleetwood's on Front St., co-owned by Fleetwood Mac's Mick Fleetwood, was destroyed in the fire -- confirmed by his own public statements and reported by CBS News, ABC7, and Deadline in August 2023 -- and this research found no confirmed reopening as of mid-2026. Kimo's, an oceanfront Lahaina landmark for nearly 50 years, was also destroyed; Hawai'i Public Radio and Maui News reported in July 2026 that Kimo's plans to return, but to a new location in Lahaina's historic Chan Wa Building rather than its original oceanfront site, with CEO Jackie Reed citing continued uncertainty on the makai (ocean) side of Front Street and estimating two to three more years before it reopens. Treat any Kimo's mention on an older "best of Maui" list as describing a restaurant that is not currently open.

North of the burn zone entirely, Kapalua's resort dining was not affected by the fire. Merriman's Kapalua, chef Peter Merriman's flagship farm-to-table restaurant at the Kapalua resort, carries a large, actively updated 2026 review base on Yelp and its own current site, and is a genuinely useful example of Maui's broader farm-to-table identity extending well beyond Upcountry.

South Maui: Kihei and Wailea

South Maui's dining is concentrated in and around the Wailea resort corridor and neighboring Kihei, and was not directly affected by the 2023 fire. Monkeypod Kitchen by Merriman, at the Wailea Gateway Center in Kihei, is a large, current New American restaurant (part of the same Merriman/PacRim restaurant group behind Merriman's Kapalua) with thousands of 2026-dated reviews. Nick's Fishmarket Maui, inside the Fairmont Kea Lani resort in Wailea, is a long-running seafood restaurant confirmed current via its own site and active 2026 Yelp and OpenTable listings. Ka'ana Kitchen, inside the Andaz Maui resort in Wailea, is an Asian-fusion restaurant built around an exhibition kitchen and a stated farm-to-table sourcing model, also confirmed current via 2026 reviews.

Upcountry: Maui's Farm-to-Table Identity

Upcountry's cooler, higher-elevation slopes of Haleakalā support agriculture that doesn't grow in Hawaii's lowland tropical zones, and its restaurant scene reflects that directly. Hali'imaile General Store, in the small Upcountry town of Haliimaile near Makawao, is chef Beverly Gannon's long-running fine-dining restaurant housed in a converted early-1900s plantation store; it carries a large, currently active 2026 review base, though Maui News reported in 2022 that a Wyoming-based ownership group acquired both Hali'imaile General Store and Gannon's -- a real ownership change worth knowing rather than assuming decades of unbroken continuity. Casanova Italian Restaurant, on Makawao Avenue in the former paniolo (cowboy) town of Makawao, is a long-running Italian restaurant and nightlife spot confirmed current via its own site and active 2026 Yelp reviews. Multiple current roundups (OpenTable's own "Farm to Table Restaurants in Upcountry" category page, Island Sotheby's) confirm this farm-to-table identity is a genuine, actively marketed regional theme here, not a one-restaurant story.

Paia and the North Shore

Paia, the small windsurfing and North Shore town on the road to Hana, carries an outsized dining reputation for its size. Mama's Fish House, on the Paia coastline, is a Maui institution dating to the 1970s, serving whole-fish seafood in a widely photographed thatched-roof, tiki-themed dining room; it carries an enormous current review base (over 10,000 reviews on Yelp alone as of mid-2026) and remains one of the most-cited splurge restaurants on the island. Flatbread Company, on the Hana Highway in central Paia, is a wood-fired organic pizza restaurant confirmed current via its own site and active 2026 reviews -- a genuinely more casual, lower-priced counterpoint to Mama's a few minutes down the road.

Hana: A Genuinely Small Dining Footprint

East Maui's Hana district, reached via the famously slow, winding Road to Hana, has a dining scene that reflects its remoteness -- this is not a region with a restaurant row. Hana Ranch Restaurant, part of the Hana-Maui Resort (operated under Hyatt's Destination by Hyatt brand), is confirmed current via active 2026 Yelp and OpenTable listings and functions as one of the district's few sit-down options. If you're weighing a Hana-area property specifically for dining access, know going in that it means a handful of resort-anchored and small local options within the district itself, not a cluster of independent restaurants.

What This Page Doesn't Cover

This page names a dozen currently operating restaurants -- Star Noodle, Honu Oceanside, Mala Ocean Tavern, Aloha Mixed Plate, Coco Deck, Merriman's Kapalua, Monkeypod Kitchen by Merriman, Nick's Fishmarket Maui, Ka'ana Kitchen, Hali'imaile General Store, Casanova Italian Restaurant, Mama's Fish House, Flatbread Company, and Hana Ranch Restaurant -- plus the Old Lahaina Luau cultural attraction, each checked against a current 2026 source. It also names two well-documented losses, Fleetwood's on Front St. and the original Kimo's, and states plainly that neither is currently open for a meal. It is not a comprehensive restaurant directory: Maui has many more restaurants in Kahului, Wailuku, and Central Maui that this research pass didn't separately verify to the same standard, and this page won't pad itself with unverified names to look more complete. Front Street's remaining destroyed commercial blocks are still under construction fencing as of this research pass, and which additional named restaurants beyond Fleetwood's and Kimo's may eventually return, relocate, or permanently close was not exhaustively tracked here -- confirm current Front Street rebuilding status directly with Maui County or a current Lahaina-recovery news source before assuming a specific address is open. Prices, hours, and current menus for every restaurant named here change constantly and were not independently priced or timed by us; review counts and star ratings shift just as fast and should be treated as a snapshot from this research pass. Confirm current hours, reservation policy, and open/closed status directly with each restaurant before planning a visit.
