January 29, 2022: The Brant Rock Esplanade Becomes "Part of the Ocean"
Four years after Riley, a blizzard on January 29, 2022 delivered Marshfield's next well-documented flood event. Patch's reporting from that Saturday described the Brant Rock esplanade as appearing to be "part of the ocean," with multiple streets "completely underwater" and cars towed from near the esplanade overnight. Ahead of the storm, the town reinforced a 650-foot seawall at Brant Rock — a preventive measure that suggests the town already understood which stretch of coastline was most exposed. More than 115,000 Massachusetts residents were without power as of 9 a.m. that morning, more than two feet of snow was forecast in places, and Marshfield's own Fire Department urged residents to stay off the roads while the storm played out.
Read together, the March 2018 and January 2022 events describe the same basic pattern twice: Green Harbor and Brant Rock take on water first and worst, and the town's response — seawall reinforcement ahead of a forecast storm, a completed seawall rebuild after the last one failed — has been reactive but real. Ocean Bluff: A Live Fight Over a 1930s Revetment and Whether to Retreat
