The Rexhame-Humarock Moraine: One of Only Two on the East Coast
Most East Coast barrier beaches are simple sand features -- long, low, and built entirely from wave-sorted sediment. The Rexhame-Humarock barrier-beach system is not. It includes an 84-foot-high moraine, a ridge of glacially deposited material left behind when the last ice sheet retreated, incorporated directly into the barrier-beach structure itself. That combination -- glacial moraine plus barrier beach -- is rare enough that it is described as occurring in only one other place on the entire U.S. East Coast. Sunrise Beach: A Real Debate, Not a Funded Project
Roughly two months after that project wrapped up, a different erosion conversation reached the Select Board -- and this one remains unresolved. On July 28, 2025, resident Peter Howard presented an argument that Sunrise Beach's decades of erosion trace back to the 1970s, when a company called Marshfield Sand and Gravel removed rock and cobble from the beach, reportedly for crushing and use at the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant. Howard's case is that this removal stripped away the natural wave-energy absorption the cobble and rock once provided: "We used to have sandbars, tide pools, baby flounder... now it's just flat."
Howard proposed boulder and cobble replenishment as a fix, citing a $600,000 Salisbury Beach nourishment project as a rough cost comparison point. DPW Superintendent Sean Patterson and Town Planner Greg Guimond responded with two real obstacles: state and federal permitting hurdles, and the memory of a past nourishment effort at Sunrise Beach that was blocked entirely when oceanfront property owners would not sign the easements required to proceed.
