Holden Beach's storm history includes a named, direct hit from one of the most destructive hurricanes in North Carolina's recorded history, and a more recent near-miss that still produced tens of millions of dollars in local damage. Hurricane Hazel, October 15, 1954: The Benchmark Storm, and It Hit This Town
Hurricane Hazel made landfall near Calabash, North Carolina on October 15, 1954, at the peak of the highest lunar tide of the year -- a coincidence of timing that made the storm surge dramatically worse than it otherwise would have been. NC Sea Grant's own Coastwatch retrospective describes the storm surge along this stretch of coast as "highest near Calabash and Holden Beach," naming this town directly, not a neighboring one. Reported wind speeds reached 140 mph, and storm surge along Brunswick County's south-facing barrier islands -- Sunset Beach, Ocean Isle, Holden Beach, Long Beach (now Oak Island), and Caswell Beach -- is widely cited at up to 18 feet. Holden Beach itself sustained extensive destruction, with property-owner and local-history sources describing rebuilding that took years to complete. Statewide, Hazel caused 19 deaths in North Carolina and roughly $136 million in damage (1954 dollars), out of 95 total U.S. deaths.

Hurricane Isaias, August 3, 2020: $40 Million-Plus Without a Direct Hit
Hurricane Isaias made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane with 85 mph sustained winds near Ocean Isle Beach on the evening of August 3, 2020 -- a few miles from Holden Beach, not a direct landfall on the island itself. Despite that, Holden Beach town officials estimated more than $40 million in local damage, and 42 of the 45 sea turtle nests identified on the island before the storm were destroyed. This is a genuinely important data point for understanding storm risk here: even a Category 1 storm making landfall nearby, rather than directly on Holden Beach, produced tens of millions of dollars in documented damage to this specific town.
The lesson from Isaias isn't that Holden Beach is uniquely vulnerable compared to other Brunswick County beaches -- all of the county's south-facing barrier islands felt real storm-surge flooding from Isaias -- but that "the storm didn't make landfall here" is not the same as "this town was spared." A buyer evaluating storm risk should weight nearby landfalls, not just direct hits, as real risk events for this property.
Other Regional Storms: What This Page Does and Does Not Claim
Hurricane Florence made landfall well to the northeast, at Wrightsville Beach, on September 14, 2018, as a Category 1 storm, and became the wettest tropical cyclone on record in the Carolinas, with a preliminary statewide damage estimate of $16.7 billion and 53 deaths in North Carolina. Florence's catastrophic rainfall affected a wide swath of southeastern North Carolina, and it is reasonable to assume Holden Beach felt real rain and wind effects from a storm of that scale and duration -- but this research did not find a specific, sourced, Holden Beach damage figure for Florence, and this page does not state one. Unlike Hazel and Isaias, Florence is not treated here as a Holden Beach-specific event with documented local damage, because that documentation wasn't found.
Hurricane Matthew (October 2016) and Hurricane Floyd (September 1999) both produced major flooding across eastern North Carolina -- Matthew's river flooding was described by some observers as "worse than Floyd" in parts of the state, and Floyd remains a historic benchmark for inland river flooding in NC. There's no alternate route off the island if evacuation traffic backs up on the one available road.
